Java 6 on Mac OS X 10.5.8

It's not terribly obvious, but if you have Mac OS X 10.5.8, it is possible to get Java SE 6 without upgrading your OS.

Visit Apple's Developer Downloads

At the time of this writing, under the java category of downloads, this is the update that will give you Java SE 6 (1.6.0_22):
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 8 Developer Package

Once installed, open the Java Preferences control panel and drag Java SE 6 to the top to use it by default.

  3. Any Ideas where I can get hold of this now? The link seems to be dead and I am struggling to upgrade an old PPC mac to Java 6.

  7. This seems to be only for 10.6 I'm afraid. After downloading and installing I got the message "requiring Mac OS X 10.6" and setup exited...

  10. The latest (and last) update of Java (JRE) for OS X 10.5 can now be found here: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13295/apple-java-for-mac-os-x-10.5.

To not disappoint Mac PPC owners: this will install Java 5 (1.5.0_30-b03) and only includes Java 6 for Intel processors. Apple never made a Java 6 for PPC.
